“Past Heroes, Present Absentees”: 7 ODI WC 2019 Captains Who Won’t Play in ODI World Cup 2023

ODI World Cup 2023 will be a great opportunity for many cricketers to show their leadership abilities. There are some players who led their teams in CW19 but now they will not be featured in the upcoming World Cup. So  It will be a new experience for some captains who will lead their sides for the first time in an ODI WC.

1. Sarfaraz Ahmed (Pakistan) 

The former captain of Pakistan Sarfaraz Ahmed led the green shirts in the ODI World Cup 2019. But now he might not make it into the Pakistani side for ODI World Cup 2023 due to the settled wicket-keeper batsman Muhammad Rizwan and promising young keepers Mohammad Haris and Haseebullah Khan. Babar Azam will lead the team Pakistan in the upcoming ODI World Cup. Under the leadership of Sarfaraz Ahmed in WC19, team Pakistan finished in the 5th position and failed to qualify for the semi-final due to the Net run rate.

2. Kane Williamson (New Zealand)

The classic, elegant player of New Zealand Kane Williamson, might miss the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. The veteran player of New Zealand had to go through surgery on his knee. His participation in the mega event is realistically doubtful. Tom Latham is likely to lead the Kiwi side in the absence of their main skipper. New Zealand was the runner-up under the captaincy of Kane Williamson in WC19.

3. Eoin Morgan (England)

The former England captain and former Irish men  Eoin Joseph Gerard Morgan led the English team which conquered the title of ODI WC19. But now he has retired from international cricket, so he will not participate in the upcoming mega event. The wicketkeeper batter Jos Buttler will lead England in the ODI World Cup 2023.

4. Aaron Finch (Australia)

The former Australian captain Aaron Finch led the Aussie team in ODI World Cup 2019. But now he has retired from international cricket, so he will not participate in the upcoming mega event. Pat Cummins will lead the Australian team in the ODI World Cup 2023. Under the leadership of Aaron Finch in WC19, the Australian team played in the semi-final but failed to qualify for the final.

5. Faf du Plessis (South Africa)

The former captain of South Africa Faf du Plessis led the proteas in the ODI World Cup 2019. But now he might not make it into the proteas side for ODI World Cup 2023. Du Plessis announced his retirement from Test cricket, but he was still available for selection in white-ball competitions. Despite outstanding performance in leagues all over the world, he was not selected for any series, including the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups. Temba Bavuma will lead South Africa in the upcoming ODI World Cup. Under the captaincy of Faf du Plessis in WC19, South Africa finished in the 7th position.

6. Dimuth Karunaratne (Sri Lanka) 

The former ODI captain and current Test team captain of Sri Lanka Dimuth Karunaratne led the Lankan Tigers in ODI World Cup 2019. But now he has retired from white-ball cricket, so he will not participate in the upcoming mega event. Dasun Shanaka will lead the Sri Lanka team in the ODI World Cup 2023. Under the leadership of Karunaratne in WC19, team Sri Lanka finished 6th on the table.

7. Mashrafe Mortaza (Bangladesh)

The former fast bowler and most successful ODI captain of Bangladesh, Mashrafe Mortaaza is retired from international cricket, thus he won’t take part in the upcoming mega event. He was the captain of Bangladesh in the ODI WC19 but now he is currently no longer playing international cricket, so in his absence, Tamim Iqbal will lead the Bangladeshi side in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. In the 2019 World Cup, Bangladesh finished 8th on the table.

  • Virat Kohli was the captain of the Indian team in the 2019 World Cup. In this world cup men in Blue faced a defeat in the semi-final against New Zealand. Rohit Sharma will now lead the Indian team in the upcoming event.
  • Jason Holder was the captain of the West Indies in the 2019 World Cup. In this world cup, West Indies finished second last on the table. Shai Hope will now lead the Windies in the upcoming event.
  • Gulbadin Naib was the captain of the Afghani team in the 2019 World Cup. In this world cup, Afghanistan finished last on the table. Hashmatullah Shahidi will now lead Afghanistan in the upcoming event.
