Under the floodlights of a packed Providence Stadium, the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) clinched their fifth Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title with a hard-fought 3-wicket win over the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) in a thrilling final that had all the drama cricket fans could aspire for.
Left-arm pacer Saurabh Netravalkar and spinner Akeal Hosein came up with impressive spells to restrict the home side to 130/8 in 20 overs. Kieron Pollard and Hosein, then, had to come up with invaluable contributions with the bat to see the Knight Riders home in a thrilling finish on Monday. Meanwhile, the Warriors stumbled at the final step yet again after losing out to St Lucia Kings in the summit clash of the previous year.
Low-Scoring Thriller as TKR Clinched Fifth CPL Title
The final lived up to its billing as a battle between two spin-heavy attacks. Amazon Warriors, batting first after winning the toss, struggled throughout their innings. Ben McDermott gave them early momentum with a quickfire 28 off 17 balls, striking two sixes and three fours, but his dismissal in the sixth over triggered a collapse as the Warriors slipped to 65/5 in 12 overs. Guyana’s 130-8 was below par but somewhat of a recovery, having been 65-5 after 12 overs.
Moeen made 10, Shai Hope 12, and fellow West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer four from 13 balls as the top order struggled badly.
Iftikhar Ahmed and Dwaine Pretorius provided some resistance, adding crucial runs to lift the side from their middle-order troubles. Iftikhar top-scored with 30 off 27 balls, a knock that included three fours and a six, while the South African all-rounder chipped in with 25 off 18. However, the innings never gained full momentum against the Knight Riders’ varied bowling attack.
Saurabh Netravalkar was the standout with 3/25 in four overs, while left-arm spinner Hosein’s two crucial wickets restricted the home team to a below-par total of 130/8.
Andre Russell and Sunil Narine Recreate Viral Moment in CPL Final
Imran Tahir removed Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell in successive deliveries to ignite some hopes for the Guyana fans. When Joseph took a return catch off Hales in the 17th over, Amazon Warriors believed a miracle was coming, but Hosein ensured the Knight Riders ended a five-year trophy drought with some intense hitting. Wild celebrations sparked off, and in the midst of everything, both Sunil Narine and Andre Russell recreated the famous moment, “final match you perform what’s happening.”
