Moin Khan Backs Azam Khan’s Selection in T20 World Cup

Pakistan’s former wicketkeeping batsman, Moin Khan, has come up as a barrier for his son Azam Khan ahead of the criticism the 23-year old faces following his selection in the Pakistan T20 World Cup squad.

He believes that Azam is a match-winner and must have been chosen for the ‘reason.’ Despite all the ‘apparent’ criticism on youngster’s fitness, Moin says that he has seen various fit players who failed to perform miserably. Hence, the former player assumes that fitness, despite being a crucial aspect, is not the only key, but a skillset should be considered too.

Proving his point, Moin opened up that Azam, in last years, has played and won matches for his own PSL franchise, Quetta Gladiators.

“Everyone keeps talking about fitness, which I agree is important. But, over the years, we have had players who are said to be fit but don’t perform. I don’t need to reiterate that Azam plays for my own PSL franchise and has won us games, so the skill aspect has always been there. So I will say that he’s a match-winner, don’t write him off.”

Opening up on the criticism Azam has gathered in a short course ahead of ‘unfit’ selection, Moin says that he always tells his son to tackle all criticism positively with his performance. He urged he also faced immense criticism during his tenure but closed the chapter with improved deliverances later.

“I love when people criticize my son. I believe criticisms will bring the best out of him; it will make him a player.”

“I have myself faced the ax several times and then made comebacks as well on the back of brilliant performances. Therefore, I have already told Azam to take critics positively.”

Undeniably, Azam, since his selection for the Wt20, has been under hot waters. As he has featured in only three international games alongside a truncated domestic career, people believe someone more deserving, probably Sarfaraz Ahmed or Shoaib Malik, could have been placed in place.
