One of the modern-day greats and part of 2 ODI World Cup winning teams, Glenn Maxwell, announced his retirement from ODI cricket after playing 149 Odis. Maxwell joins his fellow teammate Steven Smith, who retired from ODI cricket after Australia’s semi-final exit from this year’s Champions trophy.
A Shocking Retirement from ODI Cricket
Maxwell has been a central cog in Australia’s ODI side for more than a decade and there wasn’t any pressure from the board for retirement, but with the ODI world cup still 2 years away, Maxwell decided it’s the best time to retire from ODI cricket. Maxwell announced his retirement in the Final Word podcast, citing the reason for his retirement as follows.
“I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how the body was reacting to the conditions,” Maxwell said. “I had a good chat with [Australia chair of selectors] George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward.”
Maxwell’s Legacy as an ODI cricketer.
Glenn Maxwell has an impeccable legacy in ODI Cricket. Although his number 3990 runs at an average of 33.81 and 77 wickets doesn’t completely justify the crucial role he has played for Australia in the last decade. He is in the elite company of Cricketers who have won the ODI World Cup 2 times. Maxwell is also the only Australian to have scored a double century in ODI cricket for Australia, that too in chasing. It was the only double century in ODI cricket, which was scored in chasing a target.

Cricket Australia’s reaction to Maxwell’s retirement.
The board was full of praise for Glenn Maxwell for a very successful ODI Career. Both the chairman of selectors (George Bailey) and Cricket Australia’s CEO congratulated and showered praise on Maxwell.
George Bailey said “Glenn will be known as one of the one-day game’s most dynamic players, who had key roles in two ODI World Cup victories,” Bailey said. “His level of natural talent and skill is remarkable. His energy in the field, under-rated ability with the ball, and longevity have been superb. What else stands out is his passion for and commitment to playing for Australia”.
Todd Greenberg said in his statement “Congratulations to Glenn on what has been one of the most exciting and influential one-day international careers in the format’s history, Glenn’s ballistic batting has lit up the cricket world and been one of the cornerstones of Australia’s continued success in the 50 over game, including his heroic role in the 2023 World Cup triumph.

Maxwell has been a vital cog in Australia’s T20I side, and With the next T20 World Cup happening in India and Sri Lanka next year, Australia would need Maxwell’s experience to come to the fort not only as a batter but with his handy part-time bowling as well, with age not on his side Maxwell himself would be hungry to perform in next year’s T20 World cup as that could be his last tournament for Australia.
