The new ICC Annual Rankings 2025 were unveiled on May 5th. Pakistan’s top story was that they have fallen to 8th in the T20Is, the lowest they have ever ranked in the shortest international format.
Overall, Australia remains the No. 1 in Tests while India remains the leader in One Day cricket and T20 Internationals. The latest rankings rate all matches played since May 2024 at 100 per cent and those of the previous two years at 50 per cent.
There were some notable changes across Test and ODI formats in rankings, but hardly any big changes were made in the shortest format of international cricket. Let’s take a look at them.

Test
The current winners of the World Test Championship, Australia, continue their dominance in red-ball cricket. They have played 12 Test series and won eight. They lost only one and drew three.
The biggest highlight that came was England moving to second place in the rankings. Ever since Ben Stokes took over captaincy duties in the red-ball format, England have won 22 out of 35 matches. (Under Stokes, they won 19 out of 32; the other wins came under Ollie Pope in 2024).
India, however, fell below 4th. It was the first time since December 2020 that India fell outside of the top two. In the past three years, India have played eight series, and one lone match, where they have lost two of them. The two losses were the most recent ones: a shocking 3-0 defeat to New Zealand at home and a 4-1 loss to Australia at the Border-Gavaskar series.

One Day Internationals
India’s unbeaten Champions Trophy campaign saw them keep a bigger distance against the second-best side. They are 25 ratings points more than the second-placed New Zealand. Although positions 2 to 5 don’t have that big gap, just five points separate them. New Zealand and Australia (both 109 rating points), Sri Lanka and Pakistan (both 104 rating points) will change their places according to their ODI series.
Two key highlights from the changes that came were the positions of Sri Lanka and England.
For the first time since September 2014, Sri Lanka broke back into the top 4 of the rankings. Since September 2021, Sri Lanka have played 15 ODI series and won 10, including 4 of the last five series.
While England fell as low as eight in the rankings. Since winning the 2019 World Cup, England won seven ODI series out of 18 and were eliminated from the first round of both the 2023 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
T20 Internationals
Not much have been changed in the International T20s. India extended their lead in the shortest format. Pakistan, however, fell to their lowest. They have fallen 8th, the first instance for them in the format.
Pakistan’s New ICC Rankings 2024
Pakistan’s cricket have been a hit lately, with their poor performances leading to some poor losses.
The biggest hit they had was a whitewash against Bangladesh at home and a drawn series 1-1 against the West Indies, which saw them to their lowest Test rank ever at 8th and ended dead last in the 2023-25 World Test Championship points table.
They may have fallen to fifth, but they can still get back up as the ratings between position holders 2 to 5 have a small gap. They may have had a disappointing Champions Trophy at home, but before that, they had won three bilateral series straight, including away series in Australia and South Africa.
In T20Is, they have dropped further down to eighth, their lowest ever. Pakistan have won only two T20I bilateral series since late 2021, against Ireland (2-1) and Zimbabwe (3-0). Otherwise, they had a disappointing Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024 and lost 3-0 to Australia and 4-1 to New Zealand. Their next assignment will be against Bangladesh shortly after the Pakistan Super League.
