It has been a week since Australia claimed their sixth ODI World Cup title after the Men in Gold defeated host India in front of their home crowd at the biggest stadium in the world. As the days passed, we learned that the Aussie’s campaign was similar to their 1999 World Cup triumph. We thought to show you the two of Australia’s World Cup wins by looking at the similarities.
Here are seven key moments that showed the similarities between the 1999 and the 2023 successful campaigns.
Australia’s World Cup Wins: The Similarities
Australia didn’t lose a single game after having back-to-back losses
In the 1999 edition, following their win over Scotland in their opener, Australia lost back-to-back matches against New Zealand and Pakistan. Similarly, in the 2023 edition, the Men in Gold lost their first two games; against India and South Africa.
In both instances, they have not lost a single match since. In the 1999 tournament, they won six games (one tied game in that famous semi-final) while in 2023, they won the remaining nine out of nine to lift the trophy.
South Africa as Australia’s opponents in the Semi-Final 2
In both tournaments, South Africa were the challenger for the Aussies in the second Semi-Finals. However, unlike the famous tied game in 1999, Australia played better cricket in 2023 to qualify for the final.
The team that beat Australia in the group stage eventually lost in the final
Both India and Australia defeated the Aussies in the group stage. Interestingly, both Asian sides were the finalists and faced the Men in Gold. Everyone knows how the final ended for the Asian rivals.
Leg-Spinners were leading wicket-takers
Shane Warne (20 in 1999) and Adam Zampa (23 in 2023) were the leading wicket-takers for the Kangaroos. And they played a vital role in the success of their teams.

New Zealand eventually lost to the finalists in the semi-finals
New Zealand’s World Cup dream remains a dream yet again. But even for them, they had similarities in the two editions. They played the first semi-final in both instances and against the eventual runners-up. Pakistan in the 1999 and India in the 2023.
Retaining the Test trophies just before the World Cup
In 1999, Australia had drawn the Test series against the West Indies by 2-2 to retain the Frank Worrell trophy.
Similarly, in 2023, they had drawn the Ashes by 2-2 to retain the Urn.
Impact players recovered from injury before winning the PotM awards in the knockout stage
In 1999, Shane Warne had a shoulder injury and recovered and won Player of the Match awards in the Semi-Finals and Final.
Travis Head 2023 also suffered injuries before recovering and winning the PotM in the Semi-Finals and finals.
