Waqar Younis has always remained in the headlines, mostly due to his controversial activities. He was banned from bowling and was fined 50% of his match fee in July 2000. The ex-bowler was also involved in further controversies as a player in ICC Cricket World cup 2003 as he was banned after bowling a beamer to Andrew Symonds in the opening match against Australia.
Furthermore, he has been a regular target for the media regarding his coaching weakness and unnecessary remarks.
Waqar’s coaching nightmare with the team Pakistan
Waqar was undoubtedly one of those coaches, who coached Pakistan for quite a long period. The luck used to favor him a lot in his coaching career but the performances never took his side. His attitude has always remained a question and a lot of present and past cricketers of the team. He first came to the scene in 2006 as the bowling coach of the Pakistan national team but he resigned as a sign of protest against then captain Inzamam Ul Haq as Younis was in favor of Mushtaq Ahmad as bowling coach.

The Burewala express was reappointed as head coach succeeding Intikhab Alam in 2010 and the young Pakistan team made it to the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2010. After the 2010 WC, the nightmare started as Waqar was the coach when the biggest cricketing scandal broke out on international media humiliating Pakistan cricket badly. The ban on Muhammad Asif, Salman Butt, and Muhammad Amir was a tough pill to swallow for Pakistani cricket as well as the nation.
Pakistan’s Performance was continuously declining and no ray of hope was there.
2016 World Cup Report Leakage
The fast bowling legend was again given a chance to coach Pakistan in 2014 and was given a 2-year contract till the 2016 t20 World Cup but as per convention, it was again a harsh ending to Waqar’s coaching stint as his report to the chairman regarding the dismal performance of team Pakistan was leaked to the media.
Waqar was again appointed as coach of the team along with Misbah ul Haq for the Cricket World Cup 2019 but was removed due to bad performance.
Recent Controversy Involving Waqar Younis
Waqar was again in the headlines after his “heat of the moment” type of comment made people mad at him. He threw a remark on Muhammad Rizwan’s act of praying on the field during the IndoPak clash in T20 WC 2021, he said that Sabse ache baat jo Rizwan ne ki. Usne ground mein khare hoke Naamaz parhi, hinduon ke beech me. This was not taken as a joyful moment by Indians and it caused religious unrest among people.
The misfortune again came Waqar’s way when he was accused of destroying the careers of Ahmad Shehzad and Umer Akmal in a press conference by Ahmad Shehzad. Soon after this Ex Pakistani Cricketer Ramiz Raja Jr broke on the scene and accused Waqar of “racism”
