The Border-Gavaskar series may be the end of Rohit Sharma’s Test career. Rohit Sharma, struggling with his current form, is nearing the twilight of his career. He has been dropped from the fifth Test in Sydney of the ongoing series. Rohit is the first Indian captain to be dropped from Tests due to poor form. According to Indian media, his exclusion is due to his recent form and strained relations with head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Rohit’s Response to Exclusion
Rohit Sharma, who has scored just 31 runs in five innings of the Border-Gavaskar series, denies these reports. He claims he wasn’t dropped or rested, but rather “stood down” from the playing XI, “I sat out of this match because runs are not coming off my bat, and this is not a retirement decision.”
Rohit Sharma’s Recent Achievements
The 37-year-old led his team to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup held in the West Indies and the USA and retired from T20 international cricket after the achievement. He played a pivotal role in that triumph, contributing with the bat, including an important 92-run knock against Australia, 57 runs against England, and a crucial 52-run innings against Ireland.
Known as the “Hitman” of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma has amassed numerous achievements for India across all formats. He has scored 4,301 runs in 67 Tests, averaging 40.57 from 2013 to the present. In ODIs, he has over 10,000 runs at an impressive average of 49.16 across more than 250 matches, including his famous 264-run innings. Additionally, he has scored 4,231 runs in 159 T20Is, with an average of 32.05.

The Decline in Form
However, his recent form with the bat has been underwhelming. In the last 14 Tests, he has managed only 619 runs at an average of 24.76. India lost to New Zealand 3-0 at home, and in the three Tests he captained against Australia, India lost two and drew one. Age is another factor, as he is approaching 38, and by the time India plays its next Test match, he will be over 38 years old.
What Lies Ahead for Rohit Sharma?
Cricket pundits predict that the Melbourne Test against Australia could mark his last. It’s safe to say that the Border-Gavaskarseries might be the final chapter of Rohit Sharma’s Test career. With no Tests scheduled for India in the immediate future as India failed to qualify for the World Test Championship final something that seems increasingly likely the next major assignment for the team will be a five-match Test series against England starting on June 20, 2025.
However, Rohit Sharma talked to star sports and responded to the critics about his retirement.
Given his current form, coupled with slowing reflexes and the effects of age, it seems unlikely that Rohit will be able to make a comeback and play for India in the coming year or two.
