Shahzaib Jamil, a Karachi-born cricketer, has made a name for himself as a talented wicketkeeper-batsman representing the Qatar national team. In Shahzaib Jamil’s interview, he shared that his journey into cricket was inspired by his brother, Waqas Ahmad, who motivated him to take up the sport and has been his guiding light throughout his career. He made his T20i debut on 27 February 2024 against Hong Kong and ODI debut on 21 August 2025 against Kuwait and quickly established himself as a regular member of the Qatar national squad.
Struggles He Faced to Pursue a Career in Cricket Being a Karachi Native:
Shahzaib Jamil’s interview disclosed his struggles in the cricketing field as a Karachi native. He further said,
“Yes, I believe it can be difficult for athletes from Karachi to make a career in sports in Pakistan. There’s a lot of talent in Karachi, but sometimes the opportunities are limited, and the system doesn’t always give everyone a fair chance. I faced challenges like a lack of proper facilities, limited support, and sometimes being overlooked despite performing well. These struggles made me stronger and pushed me to look for opportunities where I could grow and be recognised, which I thankfully found in Qatar”.

Q: Who was your support system throughout your entire cricketing journey?
My grandmother’s unwavering support has been the driving force behind my cricketing success, fueling my passion and motivation from the very beginning. Her words of wisdom have been instrumental in shaping my career, and I’m forever grateful for her faith in me.
Q: What led you from the streets of Karachi to represent Qatar instead of Pakistan?
The streets of Karachi ignited my love for cricket, and life’s journey led me to Qatar, where I discovered an opportunity to pursue my cricketing dreams. Qatar has given me a platform to shine, and I’m proud to represent a country that trusts and supports me. I’m committed to making a positive impact and giving my best to Qatar.
Q: Do you still have an urge to pursue a career in cricket in your homeland?
I’ve found my cricketing home in Qatar, and I’m fully dedicated to my journey here. This country has provided me with the opportunities, support, and platform I needed to grow, and I’m honored to represent Qatar with all my heart.
Q: How’s your experience of representing Qatar been?
Representing Qatar has been an enriching experience that has allowed me to grow both as a player and as a person. I’ve learned valuable lessons, overcome significant challenges, and been motivated by the support of the team, coaches, and cricket community. I’m grateful to be a part of Qatar cricket and look forward to contributing to its success.
Q: As a wicketkeeper batsman, who inspires you in your role behind the stumps and with the bat?
Kumar Sangakkara’s exceptional skills and composure behind the stumps and with the bat inspire me to elevate my game. His ability to lead by example and balance both roles with confidence and dedication motivates me to work harder and strive for excellence.
Q: Who’s the dream bowler you’d love to bat against, and why?
Facing Jasprit Bumrah would be a thrilling experience, as his unique bowling action, speed, and accuracy make him one of the world’s top fast bowlers. It would be a true test of my skills, pushing me to adapt and improve, which is every batsman’s dream.
Q: Who’s the toughest bowler? And how did you handle them?
The toughest bowler I’ve faced is Gulshan from Nepal, who presented a challenge with his pace and swing. However, I managed to stay calm, focus on the ball, and adapt my game. Hitting two sixes back-to-back off him was a confidence booster, showing me that with the right mindset, I can take on even the toughest bowlers.

Q: What’s the most memorable catch you’ve taken as a Wicketkeeper?
The most memorable catch I’ve taken as a wicketkeeper was on the very first ball of the Asia Cup qualifiers in Oman, in a crucial match against Saudi Arabia. The bowler induced a sharp edge, and I caught it cleanly right away. That early wicket gave our team a huge boost and set the tone for the entire game. It showed me the importance of focus and readiness from the very first ball, and it’s definitely a moment I’ll never forget.
Q: If you weren’t a cricketer, what would you be, and why?
If cricket weren’t my passion, I’d likely pursue a business career, leveraging my leadership and decision-making skills to succeed in entrepreneurship. However, cricket is my true calling, and I’m grateful to be following my dreams in the sport I love.
