Pakistan’s cricket has long been known for its unpredictable nature, often swinging from brilliant to baffling performances with little warning. This inconsistency was displayed during the latest T20 series against New Zealand, where Pakistan faced a side missing several key players yet struggled to dominate. The Green Shirts surprisingly miss the opportunity to win the series against the New Zealand week side.
The unsettled batting position, some out-of-form players, poor fielding and bad strategy caused them to remain unpredictable and have inconsistent performance in the recent T20I series for the past couple of years.
Anyhow the team management of Pakistan tries different combinations against the black caps to check their bench strength. The team Pakistan’s next mission is to visit England for the T20i series followed by the T20 World Cup 2024 which will be played in the West Indies and the United States of America. These reasons behind Pakistan’s inconsistent T20 Performances for the past one and half years.
Is Lack of Modern-day Batting Style the main reason for Pakistan’s Inconsistent T20 Performances
Pakistan’s batting order has been a constant concern in recent years and this is one of the reasons behind Pakistan’s inconsistent T20 performances. The team has struggled to find a stable and consistent top six, leading to frequent changes in the batting line-up. This lack of stability has made it difficult for players to settle into their roles and build partnerships, resulting in inconsistent performances. The constant shuffling of batsmen has also hindered the development of a cohesive team strategy, making it challenging for the team to adapt to different situations.

Pakistan openers Babar and Rizwan are one of the best openers in the world in T20I. They proved it many times. They set many world records while opening for Pakistan in T20Is. They are the first opening pair who chesed a target above 150 without losing any wickets in T20I World Cup history. They achieved the feat of scoring 1000 runs together in the fewest number of matches (just 26 innings). Apart from they also have so many records as opening pair but the fact is that they batted slowed in the powerplay and consumed so many balls. So now that tried Saim with Babar and Rizwan and unfortunately, it has not worked yet.
Since 2022 Pakistan is the only team which do not scored 200 runs in a T20I match. This is a perilous side that once dominated in this format. Furthermore, they have yet to even win a single T20I series in this format.
Stats prove that Pakistan’s bowling has always been their strength but they need to improve their batting. Pakistan has defended 150+ targets 18 times most of the time. But nowadays T20 cricket is much faster and even 180 or 190 run targets are achievable very easily so Pakistan’s batting should change their style of play to compete with the world.
Middle Overs Struggles in Batting and Bowling
One of the biggest reasons for Pakistan’s inconsistent T20 performances is their middle-overs phase, whether in batting or bowling. Pakistan has never had an issue with opening, but we have faced middle-order and bowling issues. However, team management tried to fix other things and made too many changes in the team in the name of rebuilding. Pakistan T20 team was doing well one year ago, but then management made unnecessary changes which cost Pakistan badly.
In batting, Pakistani batters do not accelerate properly and fail to continue the momentum if openers provide aggressive starts. The batsmen who were playing with a 150+ strike rate in the powerplay got dropped to 110-120 in this phase, while the newcomers found it difficult as well. Eight out of ten times, they played with a strike rate of 110-120 in this phase. Even the rotation of strike isn’t fluent in this phase, where the dot ball ratio climbs up to 43%.
The same problem exists in bowling. This is the phase where spinners operate, and the green shirt spinners are greatly missing a wicket-taking spinner. The main spinner of the team, Shadab Khan, has not performed well for the past one and a half years in this format, which has cost Pakistan dearly in the middle overs. Pakistan needs to understand these problems quickly and should try the mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed and also give him a proper run to prepare for the World Cup 2024.
Poor Strategic Decisions of Management
We all acknowledge that Babar Azam, despite being Pakistan’s greatest batter of the current era, does not exhibit mind-blowing decision-making skills as a captain. Additionally, he lacks the boldness required to make courageous decisions while leading the team. Pakistan’s team management needs to recognize that if they appoint Babar as captain, they should also provide their input on the field. This is especially crucial if they perceive that Babar tends to adhere to scripted captaincy rather than executing dynamic plans. If Pakistan consistently loses matches in this format, we should understand that it’s not solely Babar’s responsibility; the team management shares culpability as well.
