The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled for 2030, is now set to be a bigger cricketing event compared to previous years. The International Cricket Council has confirmed the participation of 16 teams in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2030 edition.
It has been announced by the ICC that in the upcoming edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled in Bangladesh in October 2024, ten teams will face each other, while in the 2026 edition, there will be 12 teams in the tournament.
Whereas, in the T20 World Cup 2030 edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, 16 teams will compete for the title. The names of the new teams that will be added to the 2026 and 2030 editions of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup have not been disclosed yet by the ICC.
It should be noted that in 2009, eight teams participated in the first World Cup. It includes Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and West Indies. In this ediiton, England, New Zealand, Australia, and India made it to the semifinals, while the final was played between England and New Zealand, with England winning the title and becoming the champions of the inaugural tournament.
Back in 2016, the tournament expanded to ten teams, with the addition of Ireland and Bangladesh. The participants included Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies. West Indies, New Zealand, England, and Australia qualified for the semifinals, while the women in Maroon won the title by defeating Australia in the final. Notably, the West Indies men’s team also won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2016, making it a remarkable year for West Indies cricket.
World Cup 2030 to witness significant increase in number of teams as compared to past editions
Ahead of the World Cup 2030, the ICC aims to equalize the number of teams in both men’s and women’s Cricket World Cups. In the last edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, 16 teams participated, with Pakistan, England, India, and New Zealand reaching the semifinals.
England won the title by defeating Pakistan in the final. Twenty teams are expected to participate in the 2024 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The ICC is making strategies to add new teams to the Women’s T20 World Cup, but there is currently an 8-team difference between the men’s and women’s tournaments in the 2024 edition.
The ICC plans to equalize the teams in both tournaments. This initiative is impressive and appreciable, promoting women’s cricket globally by giving new teams opportunities to represent their countries. However, it is a prolonged process that will take time to balance the number of teams in both men’s and women’s T20 World Cups.
