Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) find themselves locked in a thrilling battle at the summit clash of IPL 2023, hosted at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While the cricketing action is the primary attraction, the league also boasts significant cash rewards for the teams that make it to the final.
Today’s victor between CSK and GT will walk away with a staggering INR 20 crore, a massive increase in IPL prize money compared to the earlier seasons. In the inaugural two seasons of the IPL, the winners were rewarded with INR 4.8 crore, while the runners-up settled for INR 2.4 crore.
From the 2010 season onwards, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the decision to raise the IPL prize money. In the following four seasons, spanning from 2010 to 2013, the winners were presented with a substantial sum of INR 10 crore, whereas the runners-up received INR 5 crore.
The 2014 and 2015 seasons witnessed another increase in the IPL prize money, with the champions claiming INR 15 crore and the second-placed team securing INR 10 crore. However, it was in 2016 when the IPL prize money reached new heights, with the winners pocketing INR 20 crore and the runners-up earning INR 11 crore. Since then, these figures have remained constant, solidifying the tournament’s stature as a financial powerhouse.
The COVID-19 pandemic had its impact on the 2020 edition, leading to a reduction in the prize money. The title holders received INR 10 crore, while the runners-up were granted INR 6.25 crore. However, with the ongoing season, the IPL has returned to its regular prize money structure, ensuring the top four teams are rewarded handsomely.
