Aaliyan Mahmood a Karachi-born young Pakistani cricketer, represented Pakistan U-16. He made his List A debut on 8 January 2021, for Sindh, in the 2020–21 Pakistan Cup. As discussed in Aaliyan Mahmood’s interview, he fell in love with cricket at a very young age and started dreaming of representing his country. Even after being so obsessed with cricket, Aaliyan never compromised on his studies and gracefully managed both, and still does.
Aaliyan Mahmood’s Inspiration: The young cricketer took inspiration from his father, who was also a first-class cricketer. Watching him play, Aaliyan made it clear that he wanted to be a successful cricketer and represent his country.
Recently, the Green Team had the chance to conduct Aaliyan Mehmood’s Interview, in which he shared exciting insights from his life, which are shared below:
Q: How did you begin your cricketing journey, and who inspired you to join the sport?
A: Watching my father play cricket inspired me to take the sport seriously. I would go with him to practice and see how hard he worked. This motivated me to dream big – I wanted to play for my country one day. With my father’s support, I started playing professionally and worked hard to improve my game and make my country proud.
Q: Who was your biggest supporter throughout your journey?
A: My family, especially my father, has been my biggest support system. There were times when things got tough and I doubted myself, but they always believed in me. My father kept motivating me, reminding me that I had what it took to play for my country. I’m grateful for their support – it’s helped me get to where I am today.
Q: How do you balance practice and studies?
A: For me, studies and cricket are equally important, so I make sure to give both the time they deserve. It’s all about managing my time effectively. By prioritizing my tasks and staying organized, I’m able to balance my studies and cricket training without too much trouble. Staying focused on my goals helps me stay on track.
Q: What’s your most cherished cricketing memory?
A: One moment that stands out for me is my first-class debut, where I made a dream start by taking a wicket with my very first delivery. It was Haseebullah’s wicket. It was an unforgettable experience that gave me a huge confidence boost. I went on to take four wickets in that match, and it’s a memory that I’ll always treasure. It was a special moment that marked the beginning of my journey to the next level.
Q: Did you face any unique challenges in advancing your cricketing career, coming from Karachi, given that relatively few players are from the city?
A: For me, it’s not about where I’m from, but about my efforts and faith. I believe that if I put in my best effort, stay focused, and have good intentions, Allah will guide me and help me achieve my goals. I trust that my hard work and faith will carry me forward, regardless of my background or location.
Q: Who’s your current favorite player and inspiration?
A: Graeme Swann has always been my favorite player. As an off-spinner, I’ve always looked up to him as a role model, and my bowling style is similar to his. I’m a big fan of his skills, especially in Test cricket, which is my favorite format. He was incredibly consistent and effective, and his approach to the game has always inspired me to work harder and improve my performance.

Q: What advice would you give to young aspiring cricketers looking to break into the profession?
A: My advice would be to always believe in yourself, stay dedicated, and work hard. Focus on making consistent improvements; even a 1% improvement every day can make a significant difference by the end of the year. Stay committed to your goals, keep pushing yourself, and trust that your efforts will pay off one day.
Q: Now that your journey is underway, what are your long-term goals and aspirations?
A: My long-term goal is to serve Pakistan cricket for many years and establish myself as a match-winning player. I aspire to contribute to Pakistan’s success by delivering performances that help the team win crucial matches and make the nation proud.
Q: Is there any inspiring story or experience you’d like to share with our readers?
A: In 2021 when I made my List A debut, I faced a series of setbacks. In my first match, I got injured and had to take two months of bed rest. After that, I started playing Grade II cricket, but then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and I tested positive. Despite these challenges, I had full trust in Allah, believing that He took something even better in return.
Although I couldn’t play the full Grade II season, I made a strong comeback in my seventh match, taking five wickets in my debut game. This performance earned me a selection for first-class cricket, and I made my debut later that same year. Throughout this entire process, my faith in Allah remained strong, and He rewarded me with even more than I had hoped for.
