The global cricketing arena is being regularly introduced to a new T20 cricket league giving fans new moments to enjoy and cherish cricket. Recently in Pakistan, after the introduction of two successful T20 leagues the Kashmir Premier League (KPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL), a new league has been inaugurated with the name of Sindh Premier League (SPL) which kicked off on 25th January, 2024 at the historical National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi. The league’s theme focuses on the people of Sindh with all 6 teams named after the 6 major cities of the southeastern province of the country.
Teams in the Sindh Premier League
Teams participating in the event are Benazirabad Lals, Hyderabad Bahadurs, Karachi Ghazis, Mirpurkhas Tigers, Larkana Challengers and Sukkur Patriots.
Benazirabad Lals is being led by leg-spinner and a regular of national side Usama Mir. He accompanies national cricketers like Sohaib Maqsood, Sohail Khan and Amir Yameen making the side a solid contender for the title.
Sukkur Patriots are captained by the dangerous Sharjeel Khan. Once feared in the international arena for his blistering hitting, Sharjeel has Kamran Ghulam and Zeeshan Ashraf on his side to make sure the trophy lands in the city of “Darya Dino”.
Star all-rounder Anwar Ali is the leader of Hyderabad Bahadurs, who are challenging the title with major players like Asif Afridi and Mir Hamza who have been instrumental in their team’s performance in the domestic and global circuit of the game.
Mirpurkhas Tigers are a star-studded team filled with players like Haseebullah Khan, Umar Akmal, Danish Aziz and Asif Ali. The leader of this contingent is the domestic veteran Umar Amin who has been performing exceptionally well in the league to date.
Shahnawaz Dahani is the cap holder of Larkana Challengers whose shoulder is being tapped by the legendary Asad Shafiq and the Ironman of Pakistani cricket Umaid Asif.
Lastly, the home team and arguably the most valuable team of the league, “Karachi Ghazis”. Representing the financial hub of the country, Sahibzada Farhan has been appointed as the commander of the team. This team consists of global super-star Ifti Mania (Iftikhar Ahmed). The young talented batsmen in the shape of Haider Ali and Khawaja Muhammad Nafay are also present in the team giving the franchise an edge in batting lineups comparatively.
Where does the problem lie?
Despite getting huge sponsors like GFS, Kingdom Valley and Al-Hayat group alongside the backing of the government of Sindh, the league seems to lack interest among an audience where people usually find cricket as the only solution to their daily life problems. No considerable crowd has attended any match of the league, and it seems, it is heading for a disaster.
As a Sports Analyst, there were two key observations on such a failure of SPL:
- Timing
The league is being conducted at a time when the political map is heating up in the country and the law and order situation is getting uncertain due to the upcoming elections, people have been reluctant to watch cricket at these times.
- Relativity
It is to no surprise, that the culture of Karachi and the native Sindhi people is miles different from each other. People residing in the city of lights have been reluctant to own the league and show interest since the league is mostly themed on native Sindhi Culture.
