The brand new season of the Pakistan Super League is about to kickoff and the excitement of the fans is at its peak at the moment. The tournament is set to begin on January 27th, with the home side taking on the defending champions in the National Stadium of Karachi.
We will set our focus on one of the most successful teams of PSL, the “Quetta Gladiators”.
Team Preview Quetta Gladiators
The Gladiators came as an underdog in the PSL but slowly and gradually emerged as one of the greatest teams in the tournament, largely under the leadership of Sarfraz Ahmed.
Quetta Gladiators is the only franchise in this competition that has continued with the same captain and head coach for the seventh straight season. This not only shows their belief but also the unity among them deserves a round of applause.
However, their last campaign ended in utter disappointment as they were knocked out of the competition in the group stage, winning just 2 of their 10 matches. They will start this season with an uphill task of facing Peshawar Zalmi, who were the finalists of PSL 6. These two teams have come face to face 16 times, with both winning 8 a-piece.
What to Expect from Quetta Gladiators
Sarfaraz’s men are one of the strongest contenders for winning PSL 7 as they have drafted quality players this time around. Also, Sarfaraz’s record as the twenty-over cricket speaks itself.
The Quetta fans will have a lot of expectations from their side as Boom Boom Afridi will wear the purple and gold jersey this season.
The bowling department has always been their strength and they have won many matches on the back of splendid bowling performances.
The express pace of Hasnain is always a threat to the opposition and considering his recent form in the BBL, he will be the go-to man for the skipper to take the crucial wickets in the powerplay.
The 37 y/o will be eager to make an impact in the PSL 7 as he is one of the most experienced bowlers in the tournament. He alongside the pace-duo of Hasnain and Naseem can dismantle any batting lineup on a given day.
The right-arm fast bowler has gained a lot of success in the early days of his playing career. Naseem has all the varieties up his sleeves, it will just be a matter of how he delivers on the big stage.
Although the batting was a major cause of concern for the Gladiators last season, they have always been a star-studded batting line-up. This year is no different as they have some big names in their camp.
The English opener is well-known for his powerful hitting from ball one. He can provide brisk starts for the team that was lacking in the last season.
He was the lone warrior for Quetta in the previous edition as the top order was failing every time. The skipper scored 321 runs with an average of 45.85. Sarfraz will look to repeat that performance this season.
In a trade with Islamabad United, they have acquired the services of Iftikhar, who was in a red-hot form in the domestic circuit. He is a solid middle-order batter and will provide stability in the innings.
There is no shortage of world-class all-rounders on the Quetta side. They will have to make significant contributions in this tournament.
Lala will be eyeing the PSL trophy before saying goodbye to the cricketing fraternity. Afridi is that type of player who can win matches single-handedly and Sarfraz will desperately be hoping for that to happen.
The all-rounder has proved his worth in the Bangladesh series. He is the most reliable spin bowling option for the captain, who always provides wickets whenever brought on the attack.
The Australian bowling all-rounder is a great addition to the side. He often bowls with the new ball and contributes with big sixes in the latter part of the innings.
The Gladiators seem to have all the bases covered this season and they will look to regain their title in PSL 7.
