Good Steps under the Chairmanship of Ramiz Raja

Ramiz Raja has been sacked as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board following the approval of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s 14-member management committee. Najam Sethi, who ran as the PCB boss from 2013 till 2018 (before resigning when Imran Khan became the Prime Minister), will take over the duties.

The committee will bring back the 2014 constitution of the Department of cricket. They have reported having 120 days in which they are expected to change the PCB’s constitution.

Ramiz has been under scrutiny lately due to his controversial statements, such as the “red flag” on hosting international matches in Peshawar, the unpaid salaries to 190 Pakistani cricketers and most recently, the three-zero series loss to England. There have been heavy criticisms of the former Pakistan batter by journalists and former cricketers.

Ramiz was expected to be removed the moment the Prime Minister was changed in April this year when Imran Khan had his exit. But the former opening batter decided to stay and not resign.

But despite all of the negatives that have been highlighted by the media, Raja’s stint as the PCB boss also saw many positives in his reign.

All the positive moments under Ramiz Raja

For starters, Raja announced the increase in the salary of all the players. It was increased from 150,000 to 250,000 rupees as a monthly retainer. He believed that it will give confidence in the system of, now abolished, six-team cricket structure.

The main priority of Raja was to continue making international tours to Pakistan a regular occurrence, which he has succeeded with Australia, England and now New Zealand. During the seventh edition of the PSL, the league recorded the highest profit return.

He introduced Pakistan Junior League – the first ever T20 U-19 league cricket, which was held from October 6-21. Many young cricketers, in particular from England, signed up and played in the competition.

With the help of Bank Alfalah, they joined an Enter School Cricket Partnership, where they revived school cricket across the country and made a four-year deal. There was a total of 105 designated grounds that were approved for tournaments.

Under him, the PCB increased all three pension categories to PKR100,000 under the Welfare Policy of the players. The increment in pension meant that:

  • A monthly pension of PKR142,000 for cricketers who have played in 10 or fewer Tests
  • A monthly pension of PKR148,000 for cricketers who have played between 11 and 20 Tests
  • A monthly pension of PKR154,000 for cricketers who have played 21 or more

The stand against India

What made Ramiz Raja more strong in this short term reign is his strong will of hosting big tournaments in Pakistan. The 2023 Asia Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy are scheduled in Pakistan, and Ramiz made a strong stand not to move these competitions out of the country.

On the other hand, there have been concerns about India’s participation in the next year’s Asia Cup. BCCI secretary Jay Shah clearly stated that India will not travel to their neighbouring country, causing Raja to be very upset and hence started stating that “if India won’t travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, then Pakistan will not travel to India for the ODI World Cup.”

Pakistan’s overall performance under Ramiz Raja

Match results

Pakistan team have played a total of 57 matches from the day Ramiz came into the office; September 13, 2021. They have won 36 games, the third most wins in this time frame and lost only 19.

The first task of Ramiz Raja – apart from New Zealand and England cancelling their tours – was the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. It was an immense success for his first stint as the national team not only ended as semi-finalists, they were unbeaten in the group stage. This also includes the first time ever Pakistan defeated India in a World Cup match.

In One Day Internationals, the Green Team played just nine matches. This is a very small number as compared to rest of the teams. Check out the list here where PAK are one of the two teams to play less then 10 matches in this period. In talks of wins, they won eight and lost just one. That one loss came against Australia, where they won their first Bilateral series over them after 20 years.

The worst performance came in the Test format. Babar Azam and his men only managed to win two games against Bangladesh and one against Sri Lanka. While against Australia and England, they lost four and drew two altogether.

Series Results

A total of 10 series were played under Raja’s reign. While the T20I and ODI series ended with strong performances, it was the Test side that really had many people question the former chairman. Especially the quality of wickets that played in the hands of the opposition.

Tournament results

Under the leadership of Ramiz Raja, Pakistan team have played four multi-nation tournaments. Not once the national team have failed to be eliminated in the group stage but rather ended among the top four each time.

The first competition saw Babar Azam, and his Men ended up as semi-finalists following the loss to eventual champions Australia in the first-second semi-final at Dubai.

About a year later, the national team played in the Asia Cup. They defeated India and Afghanistan in the Super 4s to qualify for the final. They lost the final to Sri Lanka. It was PAK’s first final in Asia Cup after eight years.

The Green Team then played a tri-series in New Zealand, which involved Bangladesh. Eventually, it was the host and our national team that played the final, with Pakistan winning it. It was their second series win in New Zealand.

The 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup was a roller coaster ride for the whole country. Following their losses to India and Zimbabwe, Pakistan were on the verge of elimination. But three straight wins, along with help in the group stage, saw them qualify for the knockouts, where they once again overcame New Zealand to qualify for the Final.

It was after 13 years that Pakistan qualified for the T20 World Cup final and had a chance to win it. But England proved to be too good for them, sending them to the wrong end.

Overall, the tournaments were fruitful under Raja.
