Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has been the subject of much speculation in recent months, with reports suggesting that he is set to acquire a British passport and move to England. The rumours have been fueled by Amir’s marriage to Narjis Khan, a British citizen and lawyer. There have been so many rumours in the past that have been dispelled over time regarding his movement to England and playing for that particular country, this time Champion Trophy’s final hero has admitted himself about his move to England in 2024.
The former Pakistan pacer is set to obtain a British passport in 2024 due to his marriage to Narjis Khan, who is a British Citizen. The couple has been married for more than six years now. Pakistan Born Mohammad Amir’s wife has British citizenship and as per the laws, Mohammad Amir can have that citizenship too.
Once he reaches there, he will be able to participate in the leagues and county championships as a local player. He already has playing experience in the Hundred and Counties. He is set to join the Derbyshire once he reaches there.
Once Mohammad Amir gets a British passport, Will he Play for England?
After retiring in 2020, Amir played mainly in T20 leagues in different countries. He has played in several leagues including Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and the Caribbean premier league.
According to The Telegraph, the skilful full thirty-one-year-old will get British citizenship by the time 2024 ends.
Already experienced in county cricket after representing Essex and Gloucestershire, Amir will mark his return with Derbyshire after sealing the deal with the county club.
Derbyshire also engages the director of cricket of the Pakistan team, Mickey Arthur, as head coach. He served as Pakistan’s head coach when Amir was a frontline fast bowler. So his presence will make Pakistan’s bowler feel like he is at home.
While rumours like these “Amir will be playing for England” holds no significance. He has negated this rumorous fact and said, ” I will not play for England as I have played for Pakistan and that’s where his loyalties lie”.
Mohammad Amir and the prospect of playing in the IPL
He has not given a clear Yes or no to this question. According to him, time will tell what is best for him and he will act accordingly as there is still one more year to go.
“What will be the tactics at that time… I always say that I go step by step. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow, and I start thinking about playing IPL in 2024,” he said.
“When I get my passport …whatever the best possibility will be and what I will get…I will benefit from it,” he summed up.
