A few days ago, there were controversies surrounding the PCB chairmanship race. The PPPP (Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians) expressed their desire to appoint their contender, Zaka Ashraf, while the PMLN (Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz) aimed to appoint Najam Sethi. However, recently, Najam Sethi, the current chairman of the PCB management committee, tweeted that he will not be contending for the next PCB chairman position. Now, let’s delve into the story and explore what the actual situation is and who should be the chairman. The head of an interim management committee doesn’t wish to be the ‘bone of contention for PCB’.
Najam Sethi Resigns as Head of PCB
Najam Sethi has essentially stepped down from his role as the head of the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) by deciding not to pursue becoming the next board chairman. Sethi had been leading an interim management committee that had been overseeing the board’s operations since December.
Sethi’s tweet was about the negotiations happening for the chairman’s position. Shehbaz Sharif is currently Pakistan’s Prime Minister and is in charge of the PCB. Asif Ali Zardari, a former President of Pakistan from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), is an important member of the current government, and it seems that his party supports Ashraf for the role.

The Pakistan Cricket Board Management Committee, chaired by Najam Sethi, convened at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium to discuss and finalize the composition of the Board of Governors. The approved composition includes:
- Two nominees appointed by PCB Patron
- Four regional representatives from Peshawar, Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Nominates Zaka Ashraf and Mustafa Ramday for PCB’s Board of Governors
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who serves as the Patron of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), utilized his authority under the 2014 constitution to nominate two individuals for the PCB’s Board of Governors. The nominees for the PCB chairmanship race are Zaka Ashraf, a former PCB chairman, and Mustafa Ramday, an Advocate of the Supreme Court.
With the appointment of the BOG members, the Management Committee has been dissolved. Ahmed Shehzad Farooq Rana, the PCB Election Commissioner, has taken on the role of acting chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board until the elections are conducted.
Zaka Ashraf – The New Chairman?
Zaka Ashraf, a former Chairman of the PCB, is a strong candidate for the PCB chairmanship race. He has the support of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leaders like Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto. Ashraf has a lot of experience in cricket administration, which makes him a credible candidate and improves his chances of getting the role.
Ashraf played a key role in starting the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and making it one of the best cricket leagues in the world. His ideas and hard work to create a successful T20 tournament in Pakistan have greatly helped cricket to grow and become commercially successful.
