Pakistan test cricket is improving day by day with an immense focus seen on quality batting. Still, there are some areas in bowling where the work needs to be done including attacking spin bowling. Men in green’s spin bowling was up to the mark when they had their Ex-Test spin wizard Yasir Shah and also at some point Zulfiqar Babar. Yasir served Pakistan for a very long time and used to be the team’s key bowler.
Yasir Shah’s background
To start we need to see how he has performed over his illustrious career. The 36-year-old has played 46 matches having taken a staggering 235 with an average of 31.1 and a decent economy of 3.20. He initially made his first-class debut back in 2001 so there’s no doubt about his experience. He could be a leader in the locker room in the concerned depart.
The bowler has represented multiple organizations across the world and holds the record of fastest to 200 hundred Test wickets.
Yasir Shah’s downfall:

Pakistan’s Ex-Spin wizard Yasir Shah was always a very capable bowler over an extremely long period. But questions started to be raised about Shah’s fitness. With the days passing, the ladder of public opinion started to sway that the bowler is starting to get too old and unfit for the test team. The media started to portray that this could be the end of Yasir Shah’s international career. Bad performances in multiple series like the one in Australia in 2019 where he, unfortunately, broke the record for conceding 200 runs in an innings on 3 occasions.
Yasir Shah’s Comeback
Pakistani bowler now has been given a chance to shine against Srilanka. He will be the backbone of the spin bowling. Sri Lankan pitches have been known to suit the spin bowlers well and his experience will give some boost to self and to the whole team. The cricketer has done very well in the island nation in 2015 as he inspired the men in green to a 2-1 victory taking a mammoth 24 wickets at an average of 19.33.
Yasir Shah vs Other Pakistan Current Spinners
First off to compare with Sajid Khan as he was replaced by Yasir in the selection of this series. Sajid, being an orthodox right-hand finger spinner gives a different dynamic to Pakistan’s spin attack. Although much can be said about his recent performances Shah’s lack of performances could see this decision being vital in the series. Sajid has proven that he can be a match-winner still for example the Bangladesh series and Shah has been unable to produce this recently. Also, Yasir has not played any match since 2020. The Same case can be presented with Nauman Ali as well.
Overview
Although Pakistan’s spin sensation has been added to the squad this decision could be wrong by the selectors as his recent performance is not up to the mark. Yet, he is a great spin bowler and he has the ability to become a match-winner. We will see that in this Pakistan vs Srilanka series.
