The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) had to make the call for former captain of the national cricket team Sandeep Lamichhane’s Suspension from international and domestic cricketing activities, a day after Kathmandu District Court sentenced him to eight years in jail for rape. Though Sandeep Lamichhane’s lawyers are planning to challenge the district court’s ruling in the high court, a standard has been set for the cricketers to come.
What led to Sandeep Lamichhane’s Suspension?
Rape allegations and conviction was what led to the suspension of the former Nepal captain. A police complaint was pointed out by an alleged minor on 6 September 2022, accusing Lamichhane of raping her on the night of 21 August in a hotel room in Kathmandu. Police verified that the CCTV footage from the hotel disclosed that Lamichhane had remained the night with the girl.
Lamichhane’s suspension by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) transpired in early September last year, coinciding with an arrest warrant handed out against him.
At that time, Lamichhane, then the Nepal captain, was taking part in CPL 2022 with Jamaica Tallawahs in the West Indies. The club promptly announced his withdrawal from the tournament following the suspension.

Lamichhane’s first foray on the international stage came at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh where he was Nepal’s leading wicket-taker with 14 in six games including a five-for. He has scalped over 100 wickets for Nepal. Since his international debut in May 2018, he has represented Nepal in 51 ODIs and 52 T20Is.
Lamichhane, 22, is Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer, the only one to have played in different T20 leagues around the world, including the IPL, the Big Bash League, the PSL, the Lanka Premier Le, ague, and the CPL.
His fame grew exponentially when in January 2018, at age 17, he became the first Nepal player to be snapped up at an IPL auction, fetching a bid of INR 20 lakh. He played for the Delhi Capitals from 2018 to 2020. He took 13 wickets across nine games in the IPL. Since his international debut in May 2018, he has represented Nepal in 30 ODIs and 44 T20Is.
He is the quickest to reach 100 ODI wickets breaking Rashid Khan‘s record. Lamichhane reached the 100-wicket milestone in ODIs in just 42 matches. He also led the Nepal cricket team in ODIs and T20Is and was their star with a lot of cricketing experience globally.
