The Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) seventh season is due to begin from 27th January in National Stadium Karachi. After a curtain raise ceremony, home team Karachi Kings will lock horns with Multan Sultans, the defending champions.
Six teams are part of the tournament with each one fortified with the best players. Speaking of franchises, let’s take a look at what team Peshawar Zalmi will have to offer and which players will be their strengths.
Team Preview: Peshawar Zalmi
Zalmi finished the round-robin stage of season 6 with the third position and won the play-offs to qualify for the finals. Unfortunately, their outing in the finals did not go as planned and in a seemingly one-sided game, Multan Sultans got all over their opposition to win the match.
The Yellow storm will play their first match of season 7 against Quetta Gladiators on 28th January in Karachi. Both the teams have face-offed 17 times with both teams winning eight matches each (1 no result). The two franchises have won one PSL trophy.
What to Expect from the Yellow Franchise
Peshawar Zalmi is perhaps one of the most consistent teams of PSL. They boast of a 55.07% match win percentage, second only to Islamabad United. The yellow storm has also made it to the tournament finals four times, an honor carried by none other.
Their harmonious performance throughout the Super League seasons is what has rose fans’ expectations. Wahab Riaz the team skipper recently won the T10 league trophy and is determined to carry that momentum for team Peshawar Zalmi.
The franchise has come close to winning many times and this season the fans are surely expecting a grand win. But does the yellow team have the right bowling, batting, and all-rounder skills to claim the tournament trophy? Let’s take a look
Players to Look Out For
Team Peshawar is laden with good-quality bowlers. Zalmi does really well in the bowling category. Top bowlers performing for the franchise will be:
Saqib Mahmood made his PSL debut in season 6. The brilliant English pacer played six innings in his last outing in the league and managed to take 15 wickets at an average of 12.40. Zalmi will definitely be relying upon the 24-year-old’s fast bowling skills.
Wahab’s searing pace is second to none and there is no doubt about that. The skipper is in red-hot form and is team Peshawar Zalmi’s most valued asset. He is the leading wicket-taker of PSL and is ready to make a comeback on the national side by showing phenomenal bowling skills in the tournament.
The 22-year-old youngster has been playing for Zalmi since 2018. The medium bowler has 21 victims in 18 matches. He has been consistent for the team and will be wrecking-havoc on whosoever will face the young machine.
Sohail Khan is a name not unknown in PSL. The star bowler has represented four franchises already and is ready to play for team Peshawar Zalmi.
Ranked 13th in the list of top Super League bowlers, Khan has claimed 39 wickets to his name. Fans will definitely be looking forward to his performance.
Team Peshawar Zalmi’s batting is lined-up by the best power hitters. They are looking strong in this department. The franchise will be looking at the following batters to top-up the scoreboard
The destructive Kohler-Cadmore will once again be joining the Zalmi camp. The right-hand batsman joined Peshawar Zalmi in the UAE leg of PSL 6 and smashed 113 runs in just four innings at a strike rate of 121.50. The electric English batsman will be the key in putting up runs for his team.
The powerhouse of a hitter, Hazratullah Zazai has returned to play for Peshawar Zalmi and is ready to be the bowlers’ worst nightmare. The Afghan explosive hitter once turned on cannot be stopped, his 212 runs in just 5 innings are massive proof of that. Zazai will be the backbone of his team this season.
Sherfane Rutherford is another name in Peshawar Zalmi’s list of power-hitters. The West Indian start featured in yellow colours in the sixth edition as well and the fans saw stunners coming out of his bat. He cemented Zalmi in crucial matches and with 276 runs in 12 innings he is ranked 10th among the batsmen with the most runs in PSL 6.
All-rounders are a true asset of any team and the franchise of Peshawar has made sure that their team has the best ones. Some of the key all-rounders who will be seen playing for the team are
No combination of words can do justice to what a brilliant all-rounder Shoaib Malik is. He joined the yellow storm in PSL 2020 and his performance has been nothing short of excellent. He took the team home in impossible games and that is why the yellow shirts will definitely rely on his skills both with the bat and ball.
Livingstone, who is in phenomenal form, will be Zalmi’s top player in the tournament. The Englishman has been performing well for his home team especially in the T20I World Cup and would be immensely valuable in putting defendable runs on the board and taking critical wickets. Team Peshawar Zalmi will definitely be putting their full trust in him with the bat and ball.
The Australian all-rounder who has had many successful outings in the league for Gladiators will be seen donned in Zalmi colors. His position as the middle-order batsman and bowler will be grave in cementing the team wins. Peshawar would be relying on his all-rounder performances during the entire season.
Peshawar Zalmi ticks all the right boxes when it comes to a balanced team. Their match-win percentage along with the experience and skills their players bring will provide volumes of confidence to their side. With their skipper high on determination and already carrying the winner’s attitude, it will be enough to boost the team morals and cross that finish line they get so close to every year.
