Thanks to Phil Salt’s explosive innings and support from the top order, England scored 304 runs for just 2 wickets, a total that’s never been seen before in T20 matches between Test-playing countries.
This was the first time England has ever scored over 300 runs in a T20 match, making it a historic moment for the team. In fact, it’s also the third-highest total in T20 international cricket history, with only Zimbabwe and Nepal having scored more though their big scores came against much lower-ranked teams
Phil Salt’s Masterclass:
After getting out for zero in the rain affected first game in Cardiff, Phil Salt turned things around in the best possible way. Batting on his home ground in Manchester, he played the innings of his life scoring 141 not out from just 60 balls.
He was unstoppable at the crease, smashing 15 fours and 8 sixes during his innings. He reached his century in just 39 balls, making it the fastest hundred ever by an England player in any format.
This wasn’t just his best T20 innings; it was also the highest score ever by an English batter in T20 Internationals. On top of that, it was his fourth T20I century, more than any other England player has ever scored.
Even after such a brilliant personal performance, Phil Salt stayed humble during the post-match interview:
“That was really good fun. A personal milestone, but the fact we got 300 and won by such a big margin, I can’t have asked for much more.”

Bowling Attack Does the Rest with Ease:
With over 300 runs to defend, England’s bowlers came out with full confidence, and they didn’t disappoint.
Jofra Archer, back in the side after missing the first game, bowled with serious pace and picked up 3 wickets for just 25 runs. South Africa’s batters struggled to find their rhythm, and the whole team was bowled out for just 158 runs in under 17 overs. Captain Aiden Markram was the only one who put up some fight, scoring 41, but the rest of the lineup collapsed.
