Pakistan’s World Cup 2023 kit: The kit over the years
Prudential Trophy Era: 1975-1987
The first four editions of the Men’s Cricket World Cup were played in the traditional whites and red balls. Until the 1983 edition, teams played with 60 overs of cricket. The 1987 tournament was the first where it was played in 50 overs.
Pakistan in 1975 was led by Asif Iqbal but were eliminated in the group round. The next three tournaments were led by Imran Khan, where the national side ended in the semi-finals.
First time in colours with similar themes: 1992-1999
When the World Cup was colourised. This was also perhaps the best era for the Green Team where they did brilliantly in the three editions.
1992 is no doubt one of the best. With the team in colours for the first time, Imran Khan’s side were the champions of the world in a story that was a true fairy tale. In 1996, Wasim Akram’s team were expected to defend the title with the tournament co-hosted by Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka. But they were shocked by India in the Quarter Final.
The 1999, with its kit and the squad, was perhaps the country’s strongest unit ever seen. Once again under Wasim Akram, they were remarkable. But they lost the final in the most undramatic way. Nevertheless, the 1990s were Pakistan’s best times in the 50-over World Cup.
The Forgotten Ones: 2003-2007
The two kits that Pakistan have forgotten about were the 2003 and the 2007 editions. In both editions, the team were kicked out in the first round after a disastrous show. In particular from the 2007 edition where their defeat to Ireland led to the most shocking end to their tournament campaign.
Memorable journeys: 2011-2019
The era where they couldn’t win the tournament, but the kits left a mark on the fans in the journey. Among the three tournaments, the 2011 edition was the last time the national team played in the Semi-Finals of the ODI championship. The jersey left a mark on the fans with its unique design with many calling it Pakistan’s greatest WC jersey ever along with the 1999.
The 2015 was the last event where the national team played a knockout game. The 2019 one was a different roller coaster, bringing its ghost of 1992 alongside them before their run-rate issue left them behind New Zealand on the Points Table.
Pakistan’s World Cup 2023 kit: A deep look
The new jersey was unveiled on Monday, August 28 by the PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf. The lovely new jersey was seen as the “star” and was once again imprinted for the first time since 2011 and 1999. This new one, however, sees both the mixture of 2011 and 1999. The dark green colour along with a big star printed across the front of the shirt makes it remarkable.
Here are the unveiled posts by the PCB.
