This week we saw a man rise from the ground and touch the sky. This man turned an impossible feat into a miraculous opportunity to revive himself and his game. He is none other than Rafael Nadal, the Spanish Superstar and one of the all-time greats of the game. Nadal won the Australian Open, with it being his record-breaking 21st Grand slam title.
Rafael achieved this impeccable feat by defeating no.2 seed Daniil Medvedev, in an epic 5-set Thriller at Rod-Laver Arena, Melbourne Park, Melbourne.
The final of 2022 edition of the tournament was a monumental one and which will be remembered for a long time. Against each other were two of the most prolific players. One was the face of young generation and the other was face of greatness and experience. It was Nadal vs Medvedev.
The final started off, Medvedev was the one to do the initial damage and he won the first two sets comfortably. At this point, it seemed that Nadal was defeated and the hopes were bashed. But then we saw something remarkable from the extraordinary Nadal, he won the third set by some hard work and then never looked back from that point onwards. Until he rallied off to win on the game by 2-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, and 7-5 and this was the moment when whole world stood up and applauded what they saw which was nothing short of a miracle.
Nadal was overwhelmed by this victory and declared it as the most emotional match of his career. He spoke “It was one of the most emotional matches of my tennis career and to share a court with you is just an honor, so all the best in the future. I even don’t know what to say, guys. For me, it’s just amazing, being honest, one month and a half ago, I didn’t know if I was going to be able to be back on the tour playing tennis again. And today I’m here in front of all you with this trophy with me, and you don’t know how much I’ve fought to be here. I can’t thank you enough for all the support I’ve had since I arrived here, you are just amazing.”
World’s Response to Nadal’s Record-Breaking Win
Just six weeks ago, Rafael Nadal was sitting at home with his foot injury, pondering whether he should retire, and today he surpassed his counter-parts Federer and Djokovic to be the first man on planet to win 21 Grand Slams.
The sporting world was absolutely thrilled over his win and not only tennis but the players from other sports also joined in on the action to congratulate the star on the miraculous victory.
The most anticipated reaction was that of Roger Federer and the man said: “What a match! To my friend and great rival, @rafaelnadal, heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles,” Federer, 40, wrote on his Instagram Story.
“A few months ago, we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing. Never underestimate a great champion,” he continued, referencing their recent injuries. “Your incredible work ethic, dedication and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and countless others around the world.”
Novak Djokovic congratulated the winner and said:
“Congratulations to Rafael Nadal for 21st GS. Amazing achievement. Always impressive fighting spirit that prevailed another time. Medvedev gave it his all out there and played with passion and determination we have come to expect from him”
One legend to another, Sachin Tendulkar added:
“This is absolutely magnificent. Stunning to say the least. From 2-sets down to come back and win your 21st Grand slam title is incredible.
Congratulations Rafael Nadal! ”
German soccer player, Tony Kroos tweeted:
“Rafael Nadal. That’s the tweet.”
Swiss Tennis Player, Stanislas Wawrinka stated:
“What a Final!”
The social media users have entitled this win as the “MOTHER OF ALL COMEBACKS”. Nadal has announced that he is far from over with his tennis and has proved that by winning the open. Not everyone expected that, but he proved them wrong. This win is going to impact his career positively and even prolong it. This will be good news for his fans around the world.
