The Karachi Kings kept their lingering qualification scenario alive with a dramatic win over the already-eliminated Lahore Qalandars on Saturday. In a must-win encounter, the Kings edged past their rivals by a narrow margin, adding two crucial points to their tally.
With Multan Sultans and Peshawar Zalmi already securing their playoff berths, the battle for the remaining two spots intensifies. Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators, both on nine points, were the frontrunners before Karachi’s victory. However, the Kings’ win throws the race wide open, placing them in contention with eight points.
What is the qualification scenario for Karachi Kings?
The advantage lies with Quetta and Islamabad, who received a free point each due to rain-affected matches. However, the Kings can still snatch a playoff spot with a win in their final league match against Peshawar Zalmi on March 11th. This victory would take them to 10 points, but their qualification hinges on results in other games.
Shan Masood-led Karachi needs a bit of luck as well. Ideally, they require both Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators to lose their upcoming matches against Multan Sultans and Lahore Qalandars respectively, scheduled for March 10th. Even if just one of these teams loses, it would create a three-way tie on nine points if Karachi wins their final match. The net run rate would then come into play to determine the qualifiers.
Quetta Gladiators, with two matches remaining, face a precarious situation. Losing both will knock them out, whereas winning even one secures their place in the knockout stages. Islamabad United, on the other hand, finds themselves in a slightly more precarious position. A loss coupled with a Karachi win eliminates them from contention.
The encounter against Lahore Qalandars wasn’t without its share of drama. Batting first, Lahore posted a decent 177/5 thanks to contributions from Fakhar Zaman (54) and Abdullah Shafiq (55). Zahid Mehmood of Karachi emerged as the pick of the bowlers, scalping two wickets.
Chasing the target, Karachi faced early hiccups. However, valiant efforts from Amed Vince (42), Tim Siefert (36), and Irfan Khan (35) kept them in the hunt. Shoaib Malik’s last-ball four off Tayyab Abbas, who took two wickets for Lahore, sealed a thrilling victory for the Kings.
Karachi will now turn their attention to their crucial clash against Peshawar Zalmi on March 11th. A win there, coupled with favourable results elsewhere, could see them book a berth in the PSL 2024 playoffs.
