The increase in the birth of league cricket every other year has seriously created a shortage, in time and space, for bilaterals and other events in ICC’s Future Tour Program. Now and then, it sparks a debate about whether the bigger formats of the game have become a burden for boards to schedule and players to play. It threatens the availability of players and pushes mega events to the brink of rescheduling.
The ILT20, a two-year-old, UAE-based franchise cricket league is intimidating the happening of Champion’s Trophy 2025. With the interest of players and fans alike more inclined towards T20 cricket, chances are that the 50-over tournament might get pushed back or get cancelled altogether. What is the future of this event?
Champion’s Trophy 2025 and the Clash of the Leagues
Champion’s Trophy 2025 is set to take place in Pakistan starting in the first week of February. The eight-team event always had a cloud of doubt looming over its occurrence. Ever since the announcement back in August 2022, it was always a topic of discussion. Political instability and BCCI’s tantrums never gave Pakistan the confidence that it would host the big event.
The former Chairman of the PCB Zaka Ashraf did sign the champion’s trophy hosting rights agreement with the ICC late last year but hosting isn’t the only problem that currently threatens the 50-over tourney. The first three months of the year is the most favourable window to play league cricket throughout the world. The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), South Africa’s SAT20, Pakistan Super League (PSL) and now the much more attractive UAE-based International League T20 (ILT20) utilize this window owing to the favourable climate it has to offer.
The ILT20 in a short span has attracted a plethora of players from all over the country. Favourable playing conditions, cash generation and space for nine overseas players in the playing XI are what make this toddler league so lucrative for players. It starts mid-Jan and the final is played in the mid Feb and is the most talked about franchise cricket. Even though the Champion’s Trophy 2025 doesn’t threaten it entirely it will cause teams to downgrade to understrength line-ups and the franchises wouldn’t want that especially so close to the final.
ILT20 CEO is Apprehensive about Rescheduling
David White, The CEO of ILT20 seems apprehensive about having to reschedule the newly launched UAE league. Talking to ESPN Cricinfo, White shared his views regarding the clash between ICC’s tournament and the franchise cricket event. While he says that the mega event does threaten the six-team-based cricket, he did not say that they will reschedule it.
“We are currently scheduled for January-February. That’s where the league has been played the last two years, and it’s been a very successful window. The climate’s very good, and we have had good quality players, but next year, in particular, is looming to be challenging for everyone,”
“At the moment it’s still pencilled in for the same period, but we are considering all options and just having a close look at what cricket is going to be played next year, what tours there are and the added complication of the Champions Trophy,”
Upon asking if they would consider the Oct-Nov window, the CEO said that they do have it in mind but they are still thinking.
“What I’m saying is it’s a current window. But we are looking at options, looking at the FTP going forward, looking at the clash with the ICC events and keeping an open mind. The advantage of DP World ILT20 is that we don’t have a full international calendar like the other countries. We don’t play Test matches, so there is probably more flexibility than other countries, in particular the southern hemisphere countries,”
The Future of Champion’s Trophy
While the ninth edition of the marquee event may seem in jeopardy it is highly unlikely that it will get cancelled. The rescheduling is debatable but might not happen given ICC has never had to shift mega tournaments due to franchise cricket.
Problems will only arise if, on BCCI’s adamance, the venue is shifted to UAE. The incessant travelling takes a toll on players’ health as was the case with Pakistan during the Asia Cup last year.
Players might have to make the difficult decision of selecting and prioritizing the tournament they want to be a part of. But nothing makes a case strong enough to reschedule Champion’s Trophy 2025 let alone shift it.
